About

Reykjavík Music City facilitates a strong support system and works to create optimal conditions for the local music scene.

Despite its modest size, Reykjavík boasts a wealth of musical talent across genres and professions that have established it as a remarkable and original music city. The widespread popularity of Icelandic music is not a coincidence but a result of the energetic work of entrepreneurs mixed with local talent. Reykjavík Music City facilitates the exchange of knowledge between stakeholders in the music scene, creates and encourages clear strategies to support already-existing activities, and manifests new potentials throughout Reykjavík. The project manager is María Rut Reynisdóttir.

Since its establishment in 2017 by the Mayor of Reykjavík, Reykjavík Music City has offered advice and assistance to institutions, businesses, performers and professionals in the Icelandic music industry while also advocating for the potential of music in community building and empowerment through incubator programmes for young musicians and tech-startups as well as workshops for women of foreign origin living in Iceland.

By formulating a comprehensive policy and a clear action plan for the Reykjavík Music City project, the City of Reykjavík can further develop the vibrant music scene, and the social and economic benefits that come with it.

Perspective and coordination is necessary when it comes to systematically developing the music scene and music industry in the city. The project manager of Reykjavík Music City plays a consulting and coordinating role by being a portal for the industry in the city who provides information, analysis, assistance, consulting, and international cooperation.

In COVID-times, Reykjavík Music City plays a leading role in documenting the effects of the pandemic on the local music industry and has contributed to securing government support for the creative sector.
