The widespread popularity of Icelandic music is not a coincidence but a result of the energetic work of entrepreneurs mixed with local talent. Reykjavík Music City facilitates the exchange of knowledge between stakeholders in the music scene, creates and encourages clear strategies to support already-existing activities, and manifests new potentials throughout Reykjavík.

Officially established in late 2017, the project spent the following year mapping the city’s music infrastructure before launching a number of initiatives in 2019 that all use music as a vehicle for growth, creation and community-building. Reykjavík is praised for its strong traditions of grassroots initiatives and cross-pollination within the music scene but research revealed a need for organised mentorship, knowledge-sharing and structured support for the sector to grow further.
